Below is a list of volunteer projects available at Kingwood Center, along with a brief description of each project. Please check any and all areas that you are interested in. Kingwood Hall Flower Cutter: Cut and gather flowers and material for Kingwood’s volunteer flower arranging staff. This is a scheduled position on a weekly basis on Thursday mornings, 9 to 11 a.m., May through October. Training is provided, but a flower arranging background is helpful. Flower Arranger: Prepare fresh flower arrangements for Kingwood Hall on Friday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., May through early October. This is an on call position with volunteers being called a week or more in advance of their arranging date. Previous knowledge of flower arranging is necessary. Classes for novice and experienced arrangers are held throughout the season. Flower Dryer: The volunteer flower drying staff collect and dry flowers using several methods for arrangements in Kingwood Hall. Dryers are scheduled on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, July through October. On the job training is provided. Host or Hostess: Hosts and hostesses are needed when Kingwood Hall is open, during weddings, and during special events such as flower shows. They greet visitors and help to watch and monitor the activities of the public. Hosts and Hostesses also answer questions about Kingwood. In December Kingwood Hall is open Wednesday through Sunday. Most weddings are on Saturdays and flower shows are Saturdays and Sundays. These positions are scheduled at least a week in advance. Shifts are two to three hours long depending on the location and event. Training sessions and manuals are provided. Tour Guide: Tour guides lead groups of up to 20 visitors around the Kingwood grounds, greenhouse, and mansion. It’s a wonderful way to get your exercise and meet new people! Training, update sessions, and a tour guided manual are provided. New guides are encouraged to tour with an experienced guide until ready to lead a tour on their own. Tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday and tour guides are scheduled at least one week in advance of each tour. A horticultural background is not required. We also offer tours of just the mansion on Saturdays and Sundays. Office Assistant: Help with mailings, telephoning, and general office work. Office assistants are called and scheduled as needed. Library: Help in the library weekly or bi-weekly by routing periodicals, labeling books, shelving books, and working on special projects as they arise. On the job training is provided. Ambassador: Greet guests as they enter the grounds. Provide information about Kingwood and answer questions about current events happening at Kingwood. Flower Shows and Sales Staging Committee: Staging committee volunteers prepare the Meeting Hall and/or Exhibit Hall for shows. This crew transports plants from the greenhouse to the staging area and helps design the room according to the theme of the show. Volunteers are scheduled on Thursday or Friday mornings from 8:30-11:30 in advance of each show. On the job training is provided. Show Clerk: Show clerks assists the judges by moving specimens, tying ribbons on winning entries, and by counting entries to determine sweepstakes awards. Clerks are scheduled in advance of each show. On the job training is provided. Plant Sales Assistant: During our annual Perennial Plant sale, volunteers help to count plants, bag purchases, restock shelves, and help visitors carry purchases to their cars. Sales Assistants are scheduled at least one week before the sale. On the job training is provided. Christmas Decorating Evergreen Wreath Making: During the preparation for the Christmas holidays, volunteers make dozens of evergreen wreaths for display outside of Kingwood buildings. This takes place in the beginning of November in the Meeting Hall. On the job training is provided. Christmas Decorating Committee: Crafters are needed to help make new decorations and to help decorate Kingwood Hall for Christmas. Crafting may begin as early as mid-summer, but decorating starts just after Thanksgiving. After all of the Christmas festivities have ended, all of the decorations must be counted, packed, and cataloged. This 3-4 day job takes place just after the New Year begins. On the job training is provided. Weddings Assistant Wedding Coordinator: Attend walk-throughs with the Wedding Coordinator and bride to help plan out the bride’s wedding day. Transport guests to wedding venues by driving the golf cart. Help control foot traffic during the wedding and assist in getting the bridal party where they need to be on time. Most weddings are on Saturdays and walk-throughs are during the week. On the job training is provided. Wedding Liaison: Greet wedding guests and help to keep the public out of the wedding venue. Assist the Wedding Coordinator with whatever needs to be done during the wedding rental to make the event run smoothly. Most weddings are on Saturdays. On the job training is provided. Special Events Spring Festival: Each spring Kingwood has a flower festival to celebrate the season. Volunteers are needed in many areas including information booth, workshops, children’s activities and crafts, demonstrations, and membership table. On the job training is provided. Pumpkin Glow: In the fall we host the Great Pumpkin Glow with hundreds of carved jack-o-lanterns illuminated at dusk. Volunteers assist in many aspects of this event including planning, decorating, carving, food, activities during the event, and crowd control. On the job training is provided. Display GardensAll garden positions require some physical activity including, bending, pulling, and lifting. Weeding, dead heading, planting, mulching, and maintaining the garden areas are involved. Garden Assistant: Weed, groom, and maintain trial beds, daylily beds, and iris beds as needed during the blooming season. Scheduled on a weekly basis, this group works Tuesdays and /or Thursdays 8:00 to 11:00 am. On the job training is provided. Rose Garden Assistant: Groom Rose Garden as needed. Early spring through October, volunteer assistants are scheduled Tuesday mornings, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on a weekly basis. On the job training is provided. Perennial and Woodland Garden Assistant: Assist in the Perennial and Woodland Gardens April through October. Volunteers are scheduled on a weekly basis on Tuesdays from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. On the job training is provided. Herb Garden Assistant: Assist with the general care and maintenance of the Herb Garden. Volunteers are scheduled on a weekly basis on Wednesdays from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. May through October. On the job training is provided. Terrace Garden Assistant: Groom the Terrace Garden weekly on Wednesdays from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m., May through October. On the job training is provided. Tulips and Annuals: Plant and remove tulip bulbs and annual displays. Every season displays are changed. Tulips are planted in the fall for spring displays, then when they fade, they are dug up and replaced with annual plantings. Volunteers will be scheduled at least a week ahead of time. On the job training is provided. Greenhouse Assistant: Propagate plants for greenhouse display and sales. Transplant seedlings, pot bulbs and plants, and care for topiaries. Volunteers are scheduled on a weekly basis from March through October. On the job training is provided. Peony and Trial Beds Assistant: Tend to the Peony and Trial beds. Planting, grooming, deadheading, and trimming. May through October on Wednesday mornings 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Annual Display Assistant: These garden assistants weed, dead head, and groom all of the annual displays.
