Seasonal
Displays

Over the years, Kingwood Center has become known for its
tulip display. Late April to early May brings crowds of
people to witness the riot of colors 35,000 bulbs provide.
In beds throughout the grounds, double tulips, fringed tulips,
lily-flowered tulips, parrot tulips, and tulip tulips are
used in a spectacular spring display. Utilizing mostly mid
and late-season varieties, peak bloom time is targeted for
Mother's Day; however, that is often subject to the vagaries
of Mother Nature. You might want to pay attention to our
web site for the tulip countdown. You don't want to miss
the wonder of 'May Wonder' or the spilling of 'Kingsblood'.

Once the tulips fade, they are dug out and the beds are
prepared for summer annuals. Planting usually begins the
first week of June. Annuals grown from seed and cuttings
in our greenhouses are installed according to plans which
change each year. Large blocks of color are used for maximum
impact. Masses of 'Golden Wizard' Coleus may be combined
with a narrow strip of 'Little Hero Yellow' marigolds for
a shimmering effect. Or maybe an island of Canna 'Tropicana'
will be surrounded by a bright sea of 'Marguerite' sweet
potatoes. Often something unusual can be found in the annual
displays. Variegated St. Augustine grass is one plant not
often seen as an annual edging.

Ever
seen a leek in a bed of annuals? All plants are selected
for a season-long display and will bloom until frost. Although
fall annuals are not widely used, the outdoor seasonal displays
at Kingwood are guaranteed to provide the visitor encore
performances all season long.
